Summary Of This Semester

        A busy but meaningful semester has come to the end as well as the database course. During this course, I not only learnt the database knowledge and skill but also learnt the presentation skill, how to work with other team members, how to control your project and do the time management… In a word, I accepted a completely new concept of learning process and know something about knowledge-base. I can’t say how well I learnt this lesson, but I have changed a lot during this course. Now it’s the time for me to show what I have gained.

Database knowledge and skill

        During this semester, I learnt both the basic knowledge of database and how to make out a product using the database skills. As the professor says, the database is just a kind of tool, we not only need to know how to use the tool but also need to know when, where the tool can be used. Making the plug-in of the wordpress proved that we had already got an ability of using database. Each lecture, different person brought different kind of knowledge from the basic concept, such as, E-R model, SQL, to the implement in the real world, such as application design, query and storage. All these knowledge is taught by our college students mainly. The traditional teacher and textbook come out of the stage.

        Our team took the lecture on transaction. It was really a big challenge for us. The concept of transaction is abstract and kind of fuzzy. When the scale of data is small, there is little necessary using the transaction. The transaction could only show its power when large scale of data and large amount of concurrency. We could hardly found out a simple and small sample to show the transaction clearly. On the other hand, there are so many textbooks tell something about transaction, we need to decide what is important and pick it out. Finding useful information from lots of books, finding a good way to present it in the class, I have got a lot of pain on them. But it is very necessary training, because in the future, if you want to become success, you need to find the points though many different kinds of information, then you need to convince other to support you opinion (tell them clearly). We also need to find the relationship between our lecture and other lectures. Because if we could find one opinion could be somehow based on before lectures, then we could use the conclusion to master our opinion, it will more easily than just think by yourself. Other people have already finished, why we need to do the second time? Just using theirs and solve our problem.

Our plug-in enqueue

       Enqueue is the name of our wordpress plug-in. The original goal is to make out a time management interactive system for multi-users. With learning more information, I find out that it is quite hard to make out such an interactive system on wordpress with existing capacities. So we change our mind to make out an appointment public and received system. Even to achieve the smaller goal, I still need to learn a lot associated with database system implementation.

       For the basic programing skill, I learn the PHP, CSS, JS, SQL.

       For the wordpress, I read all other teams’ plug-ins and also some other beautiful plug-ins made by others.

       For conceptual design, I learnt how to use sociology theory to design the E-R model and make it more expand, how to use ANSI.SPARC architecture to design the database system.

       For large scale of data, though I don’t really have met this situation, I learn a lot about how people in real world (such as google), deal with large scale of data and concurrency.

       Implementation is always not simple as the book told us, only after you walking through it, you will find the right solution. 

Team working

       At the begin of this course, I, together with Lu zhihao, Liu lingyan, Piao meihua, Li weiye, Tao jianpin make out a team named ideata factory. In the ideata factory, we experienced a lot of things, conquered many difficulties. We helped each other, made the team always have a good performance. We finished many unthinkable tasks. We went beyond our own. Thanks to team members in the ideata factory, it’s because of you, we could final come to a happy ending.

       In the team, I learnt how to work together with the team members, how to make cooperation with other team and how to help the team member to perform better. But working as the team leader, I still have a lot of things to improve, such as, inspire others’ potential. Although I have tried a lot on inspiring others, there are still many things needed to learning.

Finally, thanks to Prof. Koo, you help us build a very forgettable database course; bring us a kind of new learning method, tell us how to manage your time, how to share your work with others. Thanks to all the teammates, it is my honor to work with you. Thanks to all the people helped me.
